Located by the Chu River in Quang Ich village, Xuan Thien commune (Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa), Pho Dam was once one of the most bustling ancient trading streets in Thanh Hoa in the early 20th century. Over the course of time, Pho Dam has lost its appearance as a riverside trading town, but the century-old houses still seem to tell the story of the old Pho Dam. In the past, Xuan Thien was a bustling trade hub, famous for two landmarks: the Dam ferry landing and the Dam market. Initially, with its deep river and gentle shores, Dam market was established on the riverbanks, allowing merchants to travel by boat from various places to exchange goods. Positioned "near the river," it served as a trading point between the mountainous region and the lowlands. The market held six sessions every month, on the 5th and 10th days, and became well-known for its exquisite handmade goods, as well as the forest and aquatic products brought from both the highlands and lowlands. Dam Street - A Mark of the Past Glory

Located by the Chu River in Quảng Ích village, Xuân Thiên commune (Thọ Xuân, Thanh Hóa), Dam Street was once one of the most bustling ancient commercial districts of Thanh region in the early 20th century. Dam Street is known for its unique architecture, and many of the old houses here are still preserved by the locals, retaining strong traces of a prosperous trading area during the final years of the Nguyễn Dynasty and the French colonial era.

According to ancient records collected by Xuân Thiên commune, with the advantageous location “near roads, near rivers”, Xuân Thiên was once a bustling trading point, with boat landings and a market at Đầm. In the 19th century, it was a prosperous area where merchants from all directions gathered, serving as a hub for goods being transported from the lowlands to the highlands and to Laos, as well as collecting forest products from the mountains. During the French colonial period, the Đầm ferry terminal was turned into a bridge linking the West Main Road from National Route 47B to National Route 15A. The Đầm market became well-known in the region for its finely crafted goods and a wide variety of forest and aquatic products from both the highlands and lowlands. Handicraft industries, such as bricklaying, dyeing, weaving, sewing, jewelry making, ceramic, pottery, and tile production, flourished. The trade and transport services, both by road and waterway, developed rapidly, creating a bustling scene with buyers and sellers from the riverbanks to the streets of Dam Street.

Because of favorable conditions and thriving business, people from various places came to Dam Street to settle and build their lives. As a result, many beautiful old houses were constructed by the residents.

Before the 1970s, Xuân Thiên commune had about 100 ancient houses, most of them located in Dam Street, but today only about 20 houses have remained with their original architecture and household items. These ancient houses feature two-story, red-tiled roofs, built with brick and lime walls, with red clay tile roofs. A notable example is the home of Mrs. Cao Thị Đức's family—one of the few families still preserving their ancient house. This house, which is over 100 years old, was built by their ancestors and was once a cozy family gathering place. Later, it was rented out to many people engaged in trade. Today, it is the fifth generation of the family living in this house. The house is built in a two-story, red-tiled roof design, with a ceiling made of lim wood. Despite the passage of time, the ceiling has not been altered or damaged by termites. The staircase leading to the upper floor is also carefully constructed with solid lim wood. The house is spacious and airy, situated in a large yard of hundreds of square meters, providing a sense of comfort and relaxation for all family members. The houses are cool in summer and warm in winter, making them very appealing to the residents.

In the past, the houses in Dam Street were closely associated with famous shops, such as dental clinics, traditional medicine stores like Quảng Phát and Nam Ích Long, as well as gold and silver shops. However, although these houses no longer host the traditional businesses of their ancestors, many still retain their old signs as a reminder of the prosperous past. Over time, the old houses have deteriorated and been renovated to accommodate daily living. Nowadays, many people in Dam Street continue the traditional businesses of their ancestors, traveling to Laos and the mountain regions of the province to collect honey and forest products for sale throughout the province.

Craftsmanship was also highly developed here, with specialties including bricklaying, dyeing, weaving, tailoring, jewelry making, ceramics, earthenware pots, and tiles.

However, over time, due to various natural and social factors, Pho Damm lost its status as the central hub of the region, and the French-style villa architecture gradually deteriorated.

Currently, Pho Dam has about 30 houses that still retain their original architecture, of which 10 are well-preserved and almost intact. These old houses feature European-style architecture, with two stories and red roofs, constructed with brick walls and lime mortar, and clay-tile roofs that keep the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. The floors and ceilings are made of ironwood, and the levels of the house are connected by a small wooden staircase. Many of the houses still maintain their original charm, but due to the passage of time, they have deteriorated, leading many families to renovate them while still preserving the original architectural features.
