The pagoda is situated on a relatively high and flat piece of land at the entrance of the village, about 100 meters from the Chu River embankment. The pagoda’s grounds cover an area of 2,696 square meters. The pagoda was built during the Dinh Dynasty (in 980), making it the oldest pagoda on the right bank of the Chu River. In the past, it was called "Lang Pagoda," but it is now known as Tau Pagoda. This pagoda serves as a cultural and spiritual gathering place for the local people as well as visitors from near and far. Tạu Pagoda - The Historical and Cultural Relic: The Beauty of an Ancient Temple Hundreds of Years Old

The national historical and cultural relic, Tạu Pagoda, has a history of construction dating back to the Đinh Dynasty (year 980) and is located in Xuân Trường Commune, Thọ Xuân District, Thanh Hóa Province. This place has long served as a center for the spiritual and cultural activities of the local community and visitors from near and far.

Tạu Pagoda

The current relic site is divided into two worship areas:

  • The Pagoda dedicated to Buddha, consisting of a 5-bay front hall, covering approximately 200 m², and a 3-bay inner sanctuary, around 60 m². The altars inside are arranged according to Buddhist worship traditions.
  • The Temple (Nghè) dedicated to the deity Hoàng Đại Hải Long Vương Hoàng Lang, a hero known for his significant contributions to flood control in the Chu River. He is the guardian deity of Xuân Phả village and the areas along the Chu River in Thọ Xuân. Legend has it that this deity also helped the king defeat foreign invaders. In gratitude for his deeds, the king granted five traditional dances in his honor, collectively known as the "Trò Xuân Phả" dance.

Tạu Pagoda is closely associated with Trò Xuân Phả – a unique traditional dance that forms part of Vietnam’s rich folk culture. This dance has been developed and refined over a thousand years. Trò Xuân Phả is typically performed from the 10th to the 12th day of the 2nd lunar month every year at the Xuân Phả Temple in Xuân Trường commune, Thọ Xuân district. A distinctive feature of Trò Xuân Phả is that the male dancers perform with bold, expansive movements, embodying the concept of "strength within softness, and softness within strength." Their graceful yet powerful gestures and choreography reflect the essence of the agricultural culture, blending elegance with strength in a uniquely Vietnamese way.

Due to its artistic and cultural significance, in October 2016, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially recognized Trò Xuân Phả (from Xuân Trường commune, Thọ Xuân district, Thanh Hóa) as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Like other pagodas in the region, the main deity worshipped here is the Buddha. On both sides of the main hall, adjacent to the inner sanctuary, there are statues of the “Long Than”, four Bodhisattvas, eight Vajra guardians (Kim Cuong), two Dharma protectors guarding the pagoda, and a statue of the “Su To” who attained enlightenment at the pagoda.
