Description

The Shrine of Trung Tuc King Le Lai – A Place of Cultural, Historical, and Artistic Architecture

The Shrine of Trung Tuc King Le Lai, also known as Tep Temple, is located on a low hill in the center of Tep Village, Kien Tho Commune, Ngoc Lac District, the homeland of Le Lai. This site is part of the special national Lam Kinh heritage complex, about 6 km west of the main temple and over 50 km from Thanh Hoa city. It is a land of "famous people and sacred places," where historical relics and landmarks are densely scattered, covering the regions of Tho Xuan and Ngoc Lac.

After several restorations, the temple now features a harmonious architecture with two layers of the "-shaped" house structure, situated on a hillside garden facing the southeast. According to Feng Shui, this direction is considered sacred, symbolizing wisdom, with the land shaped like a dragon kneeling and a tiger sitting, creating an open, airy space. The temple is designed and built in the traditional "chong ruong gia chieng" style (a type of northern traditional house architecture - a wooden beam-and-column frame with a curved, gong-shaped roof), with a curved roof similar to those found in communal houses and pagodas.

The traditional festival here is held at Thanh Son Village, also called Tep Village, which preserves and maintains various traditional festivals in the form of farming, water management, and historical reenactments of the efforts to build the country. These are particularly evident in the spring festival and the Lam Kinh Festival (on the 21st of the eighth lunar month). Notably, many folk games and performances are preserved here, such as the Pon Pong dance, throwing con (a traditional game), and the puppet dance from Chuoc Village, which is one of the folk traditions that is now at risk of fading.

Trung Tuc Vuong Le Lai Temple, also known as the Tep Temple, is located on a small hill in the center of Tep village, Kien Tho commune, Ngoc Lac district – the homeland of Le Lai.

Le Lai Temple is part of the Lam Kinh National Special Relic Site, located approximately 6 kilometers to the west of the main sanctuary and over 50 kilometers from Thanh Hoa city.

According to the Dai Viet Thong Su, in 1419, when the Lam Son insurgents were surrounded by the Minh army on Chi Linh Mountain with no way to retreat, the situation became critical. In this desperate moment, Le Lai exchanged his clothes with Le Loi, risking his life to save his leader and protect the forces. His noble sacrifice played a crucial role in the victory of the Lam Son Uprising. To honor his contribution, after ascending to the throne in the first year of the Thuan Thien era (1428), Le Loi had a temple built for Le Lai in Tep village and ordered that the royal court and officials perform a memorial ceremony for Le Lai one day before their own memorial day. Since then, the saying "twenty-one for Le Lai, twenty-two for Le Loi" has become popular in folklore.

According to historical records, in 1450, during the reign of Le Nhan Tong King in the Thai Hoa era, an order was issued to repair and restore the temple, making it a place of worship and incense offerings for the heroic general who sacrificed himself to save his leader. In 1939 and 1944, during the reign of Emperor Bao Dai, the temple's inner sanctum was further renovated and restored for the final time, taking on the form it has today. The temple was designed and built in the traditional "chong ruong gia chieng" architectural style with a curved roof commonly seen in temples and communal houses.

Every year, two major festivals are held here: the "Le Cau An" (Praying for Peace) for the local people, which takes place on the 8th day of the 1st lunar month, and the "Le Dang Huong" (Incense Offering Ceremony), held on the 21st day of the 8th lunar month. The Incense Offering Ceremony is organized to promote the education of patriotism and national pride among the people, while also reviving and preserving the rich cultural traditions and distinctive identity of the homeland.
