Sòng Sơn Temple – National Historic Site

Sòng Sơn Temple was formerly known as Sùng Trân Temple, located in the ancient village of Đam, Phú Dương commune, Hà Trung district, Thanh Hóa, now in Zone 6, Bắc Sơn ward, Bỉm Sơn town, Thanh Hóa province. The temple is dedicated to the Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh, one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese folk beliefs. It is one of the oldest and most famous temples in the province, serving as a prominent center of cultural and spiritual activities for the people of Thanh Hóa and the entire country.

To get to Sòng Sơn Temple from Hanoi, travel through Tam Điệp town in Ninh Bình province, about 3 kilometers, and you will arrive at Sòng Sơn Temple. Situated beside the clear Sòng stream, the temple is located on the land formed in the shape of “Right White Tiger, Left Green Dragon” and is conveniently close to National Highway 1A, making it ideal for visitors to come and admire the scenery, offer incense, and pay their respects.
Although the exact year of the temple's establishment is not confirmed, a legend states that during the reign of King Lê Thần Tông (1619-1628), an elderly man from Cổ Đam village, Phú Dương commune, Hà Trung district (now Cổ Đam village, Lam Sơn ward, Bỉm Sơn town, Thanh Hóa) was visited by the Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh in a dream. She instructed him: “Go tell the villagers to build a temple for me, and I will bless them.” Following her instructions, the elderly man planted a bamboo pole in the area (now the site of Sòng Sơn Temple), lit incense, and prayed: “If this bamboo pole grows well, we will choose this land to build a temple to honor the Holy Mother.” Soon, the seemingly dead bamboo pole miraculously sprouted leaves and grew into a lush bamboo cluster, which people now call the “Divine Bamboo.” The villagers believed that the Holy Mother had shown her divine presence, so they gathered resources and labor to build the temple next to the sacred bamboo. The original temple was small and simple, but over time, it was expanded and renovated into a larger and more majestic structure.

In the 33rd year of the Cảnh Hưng era, during the reign of King Lê Hiển Tông (around 1773), Queen Mother of the Lê dynasty and Princess Đặng Thị Huệ (wife of Lord Trịnh Sâm) visited Sòng Sơn Temple to pray for children. They donated 50 taels of silver to the local people for the restoration of the temple and the construction of an arch-shaped stone bridge over the stream in front of the temple, allowing pilgrims to visit the sacred mountain and the holy fish pond.

Sòng Sơn Temple Complex – National Historic Site

In 1993, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism) recognized Sòng Sơn Temple as a National Historical and Cultural Monument. To protect and promote the values of the historical and cultural relics and scenic areas in the region, including Sòng Sơn Temple, the People's Committee of Bỉm Sơn town has gradually planned and called on organizations and individuals to support and contribute financially to the restoration and renovation of the temple. Each year, Sòng Sơn Temple hosts a traditional festival from the 24th to the 22nd of the second lunar month.

Today, the Sòng Sơn Temple relic has become an important cultural and spiritual tourism destination in Bỉm Sơn town, attracting many visitors from across the country to come here to enjoy the scenery, offer incense, and pay respects to Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh – one of the Four Immortals of the Vietnamese people.
