Hàn Sơn Temple - A Majestic Scenic Spot

Hà Sơn is a mountainous commune located in the southwest of Hà Trung District, Thanh Hóa, famous for the scenic and historical relics of Hàn Sơn, which includes: Ngọc Sơn Temple, Hàn Sơn Temple, Ba Bông Temple, and other related attractions. These were recognized as national cultural heritage sites in 1992.
From Lèn Bridge (Hà Trung town), about 9 km westward is Hàn Sơn Temple. In the past, the village of Kẻ Nước and Chí Thủy was the area where Hàn Sơn Temple is now located, and the Bông intersection is where the Mã River splits before flowing into the sea. Geographically, this area lies in the central floodplain of the Mã River delta, surrounded by mountains. The name "Hàn Sơn" holds a deep meaning: "Hàn" refers to a ravine or hidden waterfall, and "Sơn" means mountain. The mountain near the river at the Hàn area is known as Hàn Mountain, and the temple is called Hàn Sơn.

Hàn Sơn Temple from the outside

It is said that in the year 1470, during the reign of King Lê Thánh Tông, the General Lê Thọ Vực was sent to defend the Mã River intersection, a dangerous place known for its "sacred forest and deadly waters." In a time of great peril, a woman dressed in white (later known as the Third Goddess) descended from the clouds and said, “Go to the second mountain to prepare an ambush; the Mother of the Waters will assist you.” Following her advice, General Mạc prepared his forces in Chí Thủy (now the site of Hàn Sơn Temple). When the tide rose, the Mạc troops arrived, and the General sent small boats out to feign retreat. When the Mạc forces entered the ambush, they were attacked and decimated, with countless soldiers dying, their blood staining the river. That night, the girl in the hammock appeared in a dream to General Lê Thọ Vực, revealing she was the daughter of the Jade Emperor (Princess Mai Hoa), now called Lady Ba or Lady Bơ, worshipped at Ba Bông Temple. The dream also revealed the plan to defeat the invaders, attributed to the Third Goddess, known as the Water Goddess, the Mother of the Waters, or Hàn Sơn. In gratitude, General Lê Thọ Vực reported the event to the King, who ordered the construction of a temple for Lady Ba at the Bông intersection and a shrine to the Third Goddess at the high Thạch Bàn Mountain near the Hàn Chí Thủy Falls. In remembrance of General Lê Thọ Vực's contributions, the people built a temple dedicated to him right in front of the Mother Goddess temple, now known as Hàn Sơn Temple.

Hàn Sơn Temple of the Third Goddess

The Hàn Sơn Festival was established and is held annually in June, attracting many visitors who come to pay their respects. The highlight of the festival is the procession of the Goddess’s palanquin, where the Soul of Lady Bơ is carried from Ba Bông Temple to worship the Third Goddess at Hàn Sơn Temple. This ritual takes place from the 9th to the 12th day of the sixth lunar month. After the ceremonies are completed, the Soul of Lady Bơ is returned to Ba Bông Temple.

From a distance, Hàn Sơn Temple appears like a traditional watercolor painting, both serene and sacred, unmatched in its reverence. The temple’s gate faces the gentle Lèn River, with a prominent inscription that reads "Hàn Sơn Linh Từ" (Hàn Sơn Sacred Temple). Upon entering, the temple is constructed with four levels, featuring four majestic halls. Behind the main hall, a path leads up to the summit of the mountain, nearly one kilometer long, where the Third Goddess is worshiped. Although the peak is high, it is quite flat, with a large stone in the center about ten square meters, surrounded by an endless forest of pine trees swaying joyfully in the wind day and night.

In recent years, local authorities have worked to mobilize social resources to invest in the restoration and preservation of the cultural and spiritual heritage sites, making them increasingly grand and magnificent. These efforts have helped transform the Hàn Sơn complex into a unique cultural and tourist space, not only famous in Thanh Hóa but also known throughout the country.
