The Nine Wells Temple (also known as Cô Chín Temple) is dedicated to Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ, the ninth daughter of the Jade Emperor. It is located 1 km east of Sòng Sơn Temple, in the ancient village of Cổ Đam, Phú Dương, Tống Sơn district, Thanh Hóa. Today, it is in Bắc Sơn ward, Bỉm Sơn town, Thanh Hóa. The temple was built around the same time as Sòng Sơn Temple (during the Cảnh Hưng era, under the reign of King Lê Hiển Tông, 1740-1786), about 1 km to the east of Sòng Sơn.
In a battle between Tiền Quân Thánh and the Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh at Sòng Sơn, Liễu Hạnh was in danger and transformed into a dragon, hiding in the sacred Nine Wells where Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ was residing. The Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh was protected by Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ’s magic and rescued by the Goddess of Mercy, Quan Âm. As a result, Liễu Hạnh escaped the trap of Tiền Quân Thánh.

Nine Wells Temple – National Historic Site

In a battle between Tiền Quân Thánh and the Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh at Sòng Sơn, Liễu Hạnh was in danger and transformed into a dragon, hiding in the sacred Nine Wells where Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ was residing. The Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh was protected by Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ’s magic and rescued by the Goddess of Mercy, Quan Âm. As a result, Liễu Hạnh escaped the trap of Tiền Quân Thánh.

In gratitude for the compassion of Quan Âm, Liễu Hạnh became a disciple of the Buddha and, recognizing the kindness of Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ, formed a sisterhood bond with her. Therefore, every year during the festival procession of the Holy Mother Liễu Hạnh, her palanquin is carried from Sòng Sơn Temple to Cô Chín Temple, symbolizing a sister visiting her sibling – a beautiful traditional practice of the Vietnamese people.

Fish inside Nine Wells Temple

To honor Cửu Thiên Huyền Nữ for her help in rescuing Liễu Hạnh, the locals built the temple beside the nine sacred wells. Hence, the temple is commonly called Nine Wells Temple (Đền Chín Giếng) or Cô Chín Temple. In front of the temple is the Sòng Stream (a natural stream flowing through both Sòng Sơn Temple and Nine Wells Temple). The stream creates a magnificent landscape with nine deep wells that constantly produce clear water, never drying up.

Inside Nine Wells Temple

Cô Chín Temple is one of the most sacred temples in Thanh Hóa. It was officially recognized as a National Historic Site in 1993. Visitors to Cô Chín Temple can not only offer incense at the shrine of Cô Chín but also enjoy the refreshing stream (which is believed to be the nine sacred wells). Every year, many visitors from all regions come to visit and offer prayers at the temple. The traditional festival is held on the 26th of the second lunar month, featuring a procession from Sòng Sơn Temple to Cô Chín Temple and then up Ba Dội Pass. The main festival of Cô Chín Temple takes place on the 9th of the ninth lunar month, but even at the beginning of the new lunar year, people from all over the country eagerly flock to the temple to pray for health, peace, wealth, and success in business.
