Ngọc Kiều Cave is one of the seven large and beautiful caves in Kim Sơn. The cave is particularly known for its preserved stone steles inscribed in Han-Nôm script, praising the beauty of both Ngọc Kiều Cave and Kim Sơn Cave. The entrance area of the cave measures 54 meters in length and 17 meters in width, with an arched ceiling like a giant umbrella, allowing light to pour down from above. This cave once served as a large military shelter during the French and American wars and was also the location of the Nguyễn Văn Tố military factory, where weapons were produced for the front lines. From 1889 to 1907 (during the reign of Emperor Thành Thái), the locals established a temple on the mountain slope called Ngọc Sơn to honor Ngọc Hoàng, who had blessed the people.

Kim Sơn Scenic Area

To visit Kim Sơn Cave, tourists take a boat from Sen Village and travel about 300 meters to the entrance of the cave (also known as Ngọc Hồ Cave). As you approach the cave entrance, you'll see an inscription in Han script that reads "Thanh Hoa thắng tích" (Thanh Hoa Scenic Spot), which was engraved in 1892 during the Thành Thái era by the Thanh Hóa Governor Hà Đình Nguyễn Thuật. The inscription is 1.5 meters long and 0.5 meters high. The cave runs horizontally through the mountain, with an entrance about 30 meters wide. The vaulted ceiling is adorned with trees and roots clinging to the stone, while the stalactites hang in many forms. Deeper inside the cave, you will find large flat stones that are very beautiful. Moving further into the cave, after about 1.5 meters, you'll notice two Chinese characters engraved on the stone wall: "Phong Môn" (Wind Gate). As the boat continues deeper into the cave, you’ll feel as though you are journeying between the interplay of light and darkness. Looking up at the vaulted ceiling, you'll see a towering stone column resembling a pillar to the sky, with various stalactite formations, including shapes like whales and crocodiles. A beam of light shines down through the cave’s roof, illuminating the water below like a gateway to heaven. At the northern entrance of the cave, a seven-character eight-line poem is inscribed: “Quý Dậu Xuân, Huyện Doãn Nguyễn wrote the Kim Sơn Cave poem.”

A Beautiful Scenic Spot Like a Miniature Tràng An of Thanh Hóa

Local legend tells that: "In ancient times, the fairies would often descend to play in this area, and upon seeing the breathtaking beauty of Kim Sơn, they decided to visit. The fairies would gaze at their reflections, bathing in the crystal-clear waters inside the caves. After each bath, their hair grew longer, shinier, and exuded the fragrance of flowers. The Jade Emperor, curious, instructed the mountain god to carve large stones for the fairies to bathe in."

The Otherworldly Beauty of Kim Sơn Scenic Area

After visiting Kim Sơn Cave, you can take a boat northward through the Ấu Tree Lake to gain a panoramic view of the entire Kim Sơn scenic area, an exceptional ecological tourist destination in Vietnam. Alternatively, if you take the road about 1 km north of Kim Sơn Cave, you’ll enter a vibrant natural space filled with countless plants and animals, including monkeys, squirrels, and birds. This area is home to Tiên Sơn Cave, located in the Thung Vịnh Mountain. Standing at the cave’s entrance, you’ll feel closely connected to nature. Entering the cave feels like stepping into a fairyland, where colorful stalactites create magical shapes. Depending on the visitor's imagination, these stalactites take on various forms. At the entrance of the cave, you’ll see a figure resembling the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara meditating on a lotus pedestal, evoking the image of a compassionate savior who cleanses the soul and brings people into the divine realm. The crystal-clear water in the fairy’s well resembles milk flowing endlessly from the breasts of the fairies. Visitors can also imagine the grand palace of the Water King, with exquisite stone music instruments and flowing waters, accompanied by enchanting sounds as visitors touch the stone instruments. The deeper you venture into the cave, the more wondrous images you’ll discover, such as the image of the Immortal King and various strange bird and animal shapes.

The Kim Sơn cave system is not only of historical value but also of geological and geographical importance. It is a natural resource for adventure tourism, ecological tourism, and spiritual tourism in the region. With its outstanding value, the Kim Sơn Scenic Area was officially recognized as a National Scenic Site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in 2009.
