Description

The Historical and Artistic Architectural Relics of the Lady Triệu Memorial Site: The Beauty and Significance of the Special National Historical Monument Complex

The historical, cultural, and architectural complex of the Lady Triệu Memorial Site, located in Triệu Lộc Commune, Hậu Lộc District, Thanh Hóa Province, represents a combination of aesthetically significant architectural works and a harmonious, beautiful natural landscape. This site encompasses various structures related to the Lady Triệu Uprising and her worship, including: the Lady Triệu Temple, the Lady Triệu Tomb Complex, the Tomb of the Three Generals of the Lý Family, the Oath Table Temple, the Phú Điền Village Communal House, and the Đệ Tứ Temple.

The Lady Triệu Temple is planned on a vast area of 3.84 hectares, following the architectural style of “Inner Court, Outer Courtyard,” arranged symmetrically along the divine axis from the entrance to the inner sanctum. The temple layout includes: an outer gate (Nghi Môn Ngoại), a pond (Hồ Nước), a screen wall (Bình Phong), a middle gate (Nghi Môn Trung), a shrine (Miếu), an inner gate (Nghi Môn Nội), left and right wings (Tả - Hữu Vu), a front hall (Tiền Đường), a central hall (Trung Đường), and the rear sanctuary (Hậu Cung). The rear sanctuary is situated at the highest point and is solidly backed by Mount Gai. The temple’s architecture is harmoniously integrated into the magnificent landscape of the Triệu Lộc region. The system of altars within the temple follows the tradition of honoring national heroes. In the rear sanctuary: the central altar is dedicated to Lady Triệu; the left altar honors her father; and the right altar honors her mother. The central hall: in the center is the altar to General Triệu Quốc Đạt; on the left is the altar to the martial council and the three generals of the Lý family; and on the right is the altar to the civil council. The front hall honors the village’s patron deity and the hundred clans.

The Lady Triệu Tomb Complex is located at the summit of Mount Tùng, approximately 500 meters west of the Lady Triệu Temple. The tomb was built at the site where Lady Triệu, in her youth, heroically sacrificed her life at the age of twenty. The tomb is reached by 315 stone steps from the foot of the mountain. From the tomb, one can view the overall topography and landscape of the ancient Phú Điền region. Observing from the tomb complex helps to explain why, in 248 AD, Lady Triệu and her army chose this site as the headquarters for the insurgency.

The Tomb of the Three Generals of the Lý Family (the three brothers who led the insurgency alongside Lady Triệu) lies at the foot of Mount Tùng. The tomb is situated beneath the shade of ancient trees, which provide a cool and peaceful atmosphere. At the foot of the mountain is a natural spring-fed well, whose water flows from within the mountain, ensuring the well never runs dry. A commemorative stele erected by the people of Phú Điền Village in 1928 praises the heroic deeds and virtues of Lady Triệu.

The Oath Table Temple is located about 200 meters northwest of the Lady Triệu Tomb and the Tomb of the Three Generals of the Lý Family. It is believed that this is the site where the three Lý brothers swore an oath before joining Lady Triệu's insurgent forces to fight against the Ngô invaders.

The Phú Điền Village Communal House is located about 500 meters northwest of the Lady Triệu Temple. It is currently one of the most historically, culturally, and architecturally significant communal houses in Thanh Hóa Province. The communal house was first constructed in the 17th century, with the rear sanctuary dedicated to Lady Triệu (the village’s tutelary deity). During the Nguyễn Dynasty (17th-19th centuries), the communal house was renovated and restored several times. The most recent restoration took place in 2005. One of the most distinctive features of the communal house is its exquisite architecture and carvings, depicting various motifs. Visitors to this site are often deeply impressed by the skill and craftsmanship of the ancient artisans.

The Đệ Tứ Temple is located approximately 0.8 kilometers northwest of the Phú Điền Communal House. The temple honors the deity Linh Quang, who is said to have been sent by Heaven to govern the land and people of the Bồ Điền region. Tradition holds that Lady Triệu performed rituals here, invoking the gods before raising her flag to lead the rebellion.

The Lady Triệu Festival is held annually in the second lunar month, with the main ceremonies taking place from the 19th to the 24th. It is one of the largest festivals in Thanh Hóa Province, attracting thousands of visitors from across the country to participate in the ceremonies and pay respects. It is estimated that around 8,000 people attend the festival each year.

The festival is rich in content and features a variety of traditional local cultural activities, such as the mộc dục (wooden bathing ceremony), ancestor worship, ceremonial processions, royal court rites, and rituals for female officials. Among these, the procession is the most unique and sacred. Young men are carefully selected by the village to carry the palanquin, with the main celebrant walking beneath it. As the palanquin moves in a circular procession, it is as if caught in a violent windstorm, yet the sacred items on the palanquin remain undisturbed. The festival also includes folk games and performances for both locals and visitors, such as rice cooking contests, gambling games, and human chess. Particularly notable are the Mạc Dynasty play and the Hội Trận (battle formation) game. With its great values, The Historical and Artistic Architectural Relics of the Lady Triệu Memorial Site has been recognized as a tourist area by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee under Decision No. 5357/QD-UBND dated December 28, 2018.

The Lady Triệu Festival is a precious cultural and spiritual activity, reflecting the strength of the national spirit, the pride in one’s heritage, and the admiration for the heroic courage of Lady Triệu - the first woman to be deified by the feudal state.
