Mount Am Các is a large mountain running in a north-south direction, stretching across the areas of Các Sơn, Hải Nhân, Phú Lâm, Phủ Sơn, Định Hải, and Nguyên Bình Ward. The pagoda sits halfway up Mount Am Các (about 3 kilometers from the foot of the mountain to the temple), within the territory of Định Hải Commune, Nghi Sơn Town, Thanh Hóa. Am Các Pagoda is known as one of the most ancient Buddhist complexes in Thanh Hóa. Historically, Am Các seemed to be a pavilion associated with the pagoda, where monks and nuns would worship Buddha and practice their spiritual path. Because of this, in the Am Các mountain region, the scholar Lê Quý Đôn, in his book Nghiên Bắc Tạp Kỷ (Nghiên Bắc Miscellaneous Records), cited the words of scholar Lý Trọng Tân from the Song Dynasty, which also mentioned the two other mountains in the area, Am Thiền and Am Giới, which are related to the Buddhist activities and practices in this region. The Historical and Cultural Relic of Am Các Pagoda

The Ancient Buddhist Complex in Thanh Region

Am Các Pagoda is located on Mount Am Các, in Định Hải Commune, Nghi Sơn Town.

The Am Các Pagoda complex traditionally includes the following structures: Trình Pagoda, Hạ pagoda (Main Pagoda), Trung pagoda, Thượng pagoda, and the Mẫu Temple.

Over time and due to harsh natural conditions, the pagoda has become a ruin, with only a few valuable artifacts remaining, such as: worship statues, altars, stone slabs, stone steles, Buddha statues, tiles, and the brick foundations and walls dating back to the Trần Dynasty (12th - 13th century). These architectural remnants give us insight into the scale of the pagoda in its prime.

When visiting Am Các Pagoda, one can stand on Mount Am Các and gaze out towards the sea to the east or look at the winding Yên River. At the foot of Mount Am Các, there is also Hao Hao Lake, surrounded by a pine forest, which adds a tranquil, serene beauty to the site. Am Các Pagoda is one of the ancient Buddhist relics with great historical and cultural value in Thanh region. Due to its significance in terms of spirituality, history, and culture, Am Các Pagoda was recognized as a provincial historical relic in 2013. When visiting Am Các Pagoda, tourists can also visit several other famous landmarks such as: the Temple of Trần Quý Phi (Nghi Sơn Commune, island ward), the Temple of Lê Trương Lôi and Lê Trương Chiến (Định Hải Ward), the Temple of Quận Công Lê Đình Châu (Ngọc Lĩnh Commune), the Temple of Đào Duy Từ (Hải Yến Ward), the Temple of Quang Trung, the Cửa Lạch Bạng Temple (Hải Thanh Ward), and enjoy the beaches at Hải Hòa. Here, visitors will have the opportunity to taste delicious local dishes or purchase regional specialties, such as seafood, oysters, squid, shrimp, crabs, snails, and fish sauce, as souvenirs.
