Description

Đại Bi Pagoda – The Beauty of a Sacred Place

Đại Bi Pagoda, also known as Mật Sơn Pagoda, is located in the southern part of Thanh Hóa city, at the foot of Kỳ Lân Mountain, by the Vi Canal.

The pagoda sits in the middle of a flat plain, with the Vi Canal to its left and a former ancient forest of lim trees – or ironwood, a type of tree belonging to Erythrophloeum fordii Oliv.) to its right. The five-room sanctuary made of lim wood once stood there, and the Kỳ Lân mountain rises nearby. Kỳ Lân Mountain, also known as Mật Sơn or Ngọc Nữ Mountain, along with Đại Bi Pagoda (Mật Pagoda), forms a famous scenic site in Thanh Hóa. The mountain features caves, with one cave containing a passage that reaches the heavens. Outside the cave, the pagoda is surrounded by a pond and lake encircling the mountain. Kỳ Lân Mountain is renowned for being a place where scholars, poets, and ancient kings would come to admire the landscape, compose poetry, and reflect. Inscriptions of poems carved in stone still remain, and the ancient pagoda stands as a symbol of the deep connection between humans and nature. The Kỳ Lân – Ngọc Nữ Mountain range and Đại Bi Pagoda have their own distinct beauty, unlike other temples located within the city.

Located in the heart of Thanh Hóa city, the mountain complex still contains many shallow caves. Mật Mountain is also known as Kỳ Lân Mountain because of its resemblance to the mythical Kỳ Lân creature (sometimes called the “Tiger Mountain”). Near the riverbank, there remains a stone that is believed to be where Lord Chổm often sat to bathe. This site is a central Buddhist hub in Thanh Hóa city and serves as the headquarters of the Thanh Hóa Buddhist Association. The pagoda was originally founded by King Lê Thần Tông and later rebuilt by King Lê Hiển Tông in the 9th year of the Cảnh Trị era (1671) to honor his father, King Thần Tông, the Queen, and the emperor’s consorts. The pagoda was renovated many times during the Lê and Nguyễn Dynasties, but it was destroyed during the Vietnam War. In 2000, the pagoda was restored by the monks and local residents, becoming the grand structure we see today.

Kỳ Lân Mountain and Đại Bi Pagoda are also historical revolutionary sites, serving as gathering points for patriotic movements and revolutionary struggles during the French and American wars. The site retains valuable cultural and historical artifacts, such as statues of King Lê Thần Tông and his consorts dating back to the 17th century, as well as a well with intricate carvings from the same era. With its great values, Đại Bi Pagoda was recognized as a tourist destination by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee under Decision No. 216/QD-UBND dated January 14, 2019.

Dai Bi Pagoda was built at the end of the reign of King Le Huyen Tong, around the 17th century, with Buddha statues and Arhat statues carved in the 17th century. The architecture of the pagoda follows the Dinh style, with many stone statues and precious stone inscriptions. Inside the pagoda, there are statues of King Le Than Tong and the queens, considered as precious cultural heritage of Vietnam. The pagoda is also known for the Fairy Well built of stone using 17th-century technology.

In addition to its natural beauty and cultural heritage, Dai Bi Pagoda is also associated with important historical events such as commemorating Phan Chu Trinh and the day the red flag with a yellow star was raised to declare Vietnam’s independence. Dai Bi Pagoda – Ky Lan Mountain is classified as a Provincial-level Historical and Cultural Relic Cluster.
