Description

Tăng Phúc Pagoda – A Place of Unique Cultural and Architectural Beauty

Tăng Phúc Pagoda, formerly located in Thổ Sơn village, Đông Khối commune, Thọ Hạc district, Đông Sơn, Thanh Hóa province, is now in Hạc Oa village, Đông Cương ward, Thanh Hóa city. The pagoda was built during the Trần Dynasty (13th century) and was relocated to Hạc Oa village in the 32nd year of the Cảnh Hưng era under the reign of King Lê Hiển Tông (1771).

Main Gate of Tăng Phúc Pagoda

The pagoda was renovated multiple times during the Later Lê and Nguyễn Dynasties but was destroyed by American bombs in 1972. From 1998 to 2007, the local villagers, government, and Buddhist monks and followers rebuilt the pagoda. Tăng Phúc Pagoda has been the place of practice for many high-ranking monks and a religious gathering place for the local people. In 1945, the pagoda served as a gathering point for the people of Đông Sơn and surrounding areas during the general uprising to seize power. Throughout the French and American resistance wars, the pagoda, along with local soldiers and civilians, contributed to the long-lasting struggle to defend the independence and sovereignty of the nation. During the American bombing campaign, the pagoda served as a post-surgical site for the Hàm Rồng - Nam Ngạn front, one of the areas heavily targeted by American bombs.

Through centuries of events and challenges, the pagoda remains solemn and steadfast, a testament to its eternal existence. Tăng Phúc Pagoda is now built in a grand and impressive manner, with several components, including the Đại Hùng Bảo Điện (Main Hall), the ancestral hall, the Mother Goddess hall, the feng shui pond, Sơn Trang cave, the Minh Đường area, and the Tam Quan gate. The pagoda also retains several relics, such as a stone stele from the 36th year of the Cảnh Hưng era (1775) during the Lê Hiển Tông reign, along with several stone foundations and columns. From the pagoda, looking west, you can see Voi Mountain, Phượng Mountain, vast rice fields, and the ancient Đông Sơn village, creating a colorful natural landscape. The architecture of Tăng Phúc Pagoda blends harmoniously with the surrounding scenery, making it convenient for Buddhists and visitors to come and practice rituals and engage in spiritual activities.

One of the special features that attracts visitors to the pagoda is its unique architecture and peaceful atmosphere, creating a feeling as though visitors are stepping into a “paradise” with each visit.

The pagoda hosts several festivals during major Buddhist holidays, attracting many Buddhists and local residents. These festivals not only serve as a time for prayer for peace and good fortune but also provide an opportunity for people to socialize and connect with each other.

With its great values, Tăng Phúc Pagoda was recognized as a tourist destination by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee under Decision No. 217/QD-UBND dated January 14, 2019.
