Diem Pho village (now Ngu Loc commune, Hau Loc district) was built by the first residents about 8 centuries ago right next to the sea, on the land of Con Bo and next to the mouth of Lach Truong river. They named the village Diem Pho, which, according to the explanation of cultural researcher Hoang Tuan Pho, is a word name - a name associated with the historical process of several hundred years, since the Le dynasty. Based on the phonetic Chinese characters, "Diem" means salt, and "Pho" means wharf, river bank, here it can be understood as "nai muoi". This explanation is also true to the geographical characteristics (located close to the coast) and occupations (salt making, fishing) of the village, based on which the ancients named the land. Diem Pho is an old and most populous fishing village in Thanh Hoa. At the same time, from very early on, this fishing village became famous thanks to its dense population distribution and narrow land, not less than Hanoi's Old Quarter. Description

The Diêm Phố Monument Complex – An Attractive Spiritual Destination

The Diêm Phố Monument Complex, located in Ngư Lộc Commune, is a historical, cultural, and architectural site recognized by the Department of Culture and Information as a provincial-level historical monument according to Decision No. 28/VHQĐ on March 22, 1991; recognized by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee as a provincial-level tourist destination according to Decision No. 107/QD-UBND dated January 7, 2019. The complex includes: Diêm Phố Temple, the temple dedicated to the Whale God (Đức Ông Temple), Liên Hoa Pagoda, and Nẹ Sơn Temple.

The Diêm Phố pagoda and temple complex, with its harmonious architecture, natural surroundings, trees, and landscapes, has made a lasting impression on visitors who come to admire and worship at the site. Notably, in 2017, the Cầu Ngư Festival (Fish Worshipping Festival) was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage. This festival is the largest of the year for the commune and is also the most significant and distinctive festival along the coastal region of Thanh Hóa Province.

Diêm Phố Temple: This temple is dedicated to the Four Holy Goddesses (Tứ vị Thánh nương), a central figure in the spiritual life of the fishermen in Hậu Lộc District. The temple was built in 1946 but has preserved its original architectural style. The design is symmetrically balanced, with a central shrine, three gates (tam quan), and two auxiliary wings, with a rectangular brick courtyard in the middle. The architecture is solid, with flowing lines and a grand appearance. The temple also retains many valuable ancient artifacts, including a Bát cống palanquin, a Long Đình palanquin, a throne, incense burners, carved woodwork, couplets, Lê Dynasty stone dragons, and ivory chopsticks.

Liên Hoa Pagoda (Image: Source from the Internet)

Liên Hoa Pagoda: The pagoda is constructed in the shape of the Chinese character "Đinh" and is located adjacent to the main temple, slightly skewed to the southwest. The pagoda is framed by a three-tiered tam quan gate, with a large bronze bell hanging on the second tier, cast in Mậu Dần (1938) in Hanoi. The architecture of the pagoda consists of three main halls: the Hạ đường (lower hall), Trung đường (middle hall), and Tiền đường (front hall). The pagoda also houses 18 wooden statues of the Buddha, gilded with gold leaf, along with several carved couplets and inscriptions.

Đức Ông Temple (Image: Source from the Internet)

Đức Ông Temple: The Đức Ông Temple is dedicated to the Whale God (Cá Ông), a deity revered by fishermen. The temple was also constructed in 1946. Two royal decrees from the Nguyễn Dynasty (in Đồng Khánh year 2, 1887, and Khải Định year 9, 1924) are preserved in this temple. Notably, the temple also enshrines a whale skeleton. For the fishermen, the Whale God Temple is a vital spiritual refuge, a place to seek protection and offer prayers for safety during dangerous sea voyages.

Nẹ Sơn Temple (Image: Source from the Internet)

Nẹ Sơn Temple: Located on Nẹ Island in Ngư Lộc Commune, this temple is dedicated to the deity Vua Thông Thủy (King of the Waters). The temple has been in existence for many years and has undergone several restorations and repairs, now standing in a more prosperous state. It serves as a spiritual center for local fishermen. Before embarking on a fishing trip, the villagers visit the temple to pray for calm seas and bountiful catches.

The Diêm Phố Pagoda and Temple Complex has become a well-known spiritual site for many people from the coastal region of Hậu Lộc. With its preservation of traditional Vietnamese cultural values, it enhances the spiritual landscape of a land known for its rich historical and social transformations. It serves as a reminder of ancestral roots and a breathing space for the preservation of the nation’s cultural identity.

In the 70s and 80s of the last century, with the policy of "closing the waterfront, building a national defense and developing the economy" of Hau Loc district, the people of Diem Pho and Diem Pho - Ngu Loc village, like bees, intertwined with the communes along the coastline, running from Da Loc to Hoa Loc. From there, a strong fishing community was formed. According to statistics from 1990, although there were many times of migration to establish new villages in different places, Diem Pho was still the most populous village (and commune) in Hau Loc district and Thanh Hoa province (with a total population of 14,628 people).

Diem Pho's coastline is about 1.2 km long, accounting for 1/10 of the coastline of Hau Loc district. This is known as a low, hollow and muddy sea bay. On days of high tide, it is very difficult to travel on the sea and boats seem to be stuck in the mud. Although short, it is often affected by the climate and especially the tide, causing the Diem Pho coastline to be constantly eroded. "In years with big storms and floods, the sea rises, the waves crash into the fields and villages, causing the coastline from Diem Pho to the South to gradually retreat, retreat further inland, up to 50m deep" (Geographical Records of Hau Loc). Being eroded by the sea for many centuries, the terrain and shape of the village have also changed. From the location of the ancient Lach Truong river mouth, through each period, Diem Pho gradually moved towards the West and Northwest. Today, Diem Pho has a basically stable terrain at the point between the two river mouths of Lach Sung and Lach Truong. Looking at the map, Diem Pho looks like a trapezoid, with the small base being the land deep in Minh Loc territory, and the large base being the sea surface. The shape of this fishing village is no different from a funnel that sucks in and holds wind.
