Games – A “Magnet” for Attracting Visitors

Alongside natural landscapes and local cultural values, recreational activities are increasingly becoming a “magnet” for attracting visitors to tourism destinations. From active and adventure-based pursuits to traditional folk games rich in cultural identity, each activity not only adds to the appeal of a destination but also turns moments of fun and excitement into memorable parts of the travel experience.

A diverse range of games and recreational activities not only attracts visitors but also helps build the “brand” of a destination. Last July, thousands of visitors from Thanh Hoa and other provinces flocked to the Yen Trung Tourism Village Festival. Here, visitors could choose activities suited to their interests.

Children enjoyed educational and gentle recreational games such as mandarin square capturing, chess and Chinese chess. Adults were eager to take on physical, adventurous or skill-based activities such as rope swinging and traditional fishing with hand nets. Meanwhile, folk games such as catching fish, blindfolded duck catching and sack races consistently attracted large numbers of participants. Group activities such as tug-of-war and campfires became highlights of the festival, bringing visitors closer together in the lively atmosphere.

In addition to meeting the recreational needs of different groups, the Yen Trung Tourism Village Festival also focused on creating group activities that families and friends could enjoy together. This year, the festival also introduced more modern activities such as jet-skiing, offering fresh and exciting experiences, enriching the destination’s tourism products and meeting visitors’ growing demand for exploration and adventure, particularly among younger travelers.

Nguyen Thu Ha, a visitor from Hanoi, said: “Three generations of my family came to the festival together. At first, we were concerned about finding activities suitable for everyone. But once we arrived, there was something for each of us. The children loved catching fish and joining sack races, while my husband and I tried the rope swing. The grandparents simply enjoyed walking around and taking in the scenery. In the evening, the whole family gathered around the campfire, and everyone was happy with their own experiences at the festival.”

According to Nguyen Chien Thang, Executive Director of Yen Trung Tourism Village, diversifying games and experiential activities is one of the factors the destination focuses on to enhance its appeal.

Alongside its natural landscapes, traditional culture and green agriculture, Yen Trung has developed recreational activities suitable for a wide range of visitors.

“We want visitors to Yen Trung not only to sightsee and relax, but also to enjoy healthy and meaningful recreational activities. Therefore, the games we select and organize are designed to offer something new while remaining appropriate to the destination’s space and cultural identity. Traditional folk games help visitors learn more about local culture, while physical and modern games create excitement, especially among younger visitors,” Nguyen Chien Thang said.

Recreational activities are becoming an increasingly important part of Yen Trung’s tourism products. With more experiences to choose from, visitors are also encouraged to spend more time enjoying activities and staying overnight at the destination.

Yen Trung is not alone. Many tourism areas and attractions across Thanh Hoa are also placing greater emphasis on developing suitable recreational activities, considering them an important part of refreshing tourism products and attracting visitors. Each destination has its own approach, with games and activities tailored to its setting, target visitor groups, and existing cultural and natural values.

At coastal tourism destinations, water- and sea-based activities such as jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing and banana boat rides offer exciting experiences while making the most of the destination’s natural advantages.

Meanwhile, at entertainment and recreation complexes such as Anh Phat Tourism Area, physical activities are designed to be lively and modern, including Go-Kart racing, ATV off-road driving, four-wheel driving on steep and rugged terrain, ziplining and grass sledding.

At community-based tourism destinations, games take on a different character. Traditional activities such as stick pushing, còn throwing and tug-of-war are incorporated into experiential programs, allowing visitors not only to have fun but also to directly explore the culture and customs of local ethnic communities.

A game that is sufficiently new and exciting can spark curiosity, become a highlight that draws visitors and encourages them to share their experiences, thereby helping tourism destinations gain wider exposure.

When each tourism area or attraction develops distinctive activities and diversifies its tourism products, visitors are more likely to remember the destination and look forward to returning for new experiences.

In this way, games become a “magnet,” bringing visitors closer to destinations while contributing to the broader momentum of tourism development in Thanh Hoa.
