With the summer sun shining brightly, Pù Xèo Peak and Thien Thuy Waterfall, with their stunning natural scenery, are captivating destinations in western Thanh Hoa.

Thien Thuy Waterfall – a destination with strong potential for tourism development.

To reach the summit of Pù Xèo, visitors travel along National Highway 47 to Tien Son Village in Thuong Xuan Commune, then continue on foot for more than two hours. Along the route to the mountain peak, they will encounter ancient starfruit forests and small rest huts built by local residents.

Upon reaching the summit of Pù Xèo, the vast and tranquil surroundings quickly wash away all fatigue. With its fresh, cool climate, Pù Xèo is an ideal place to escape the summer heat. As dusk falls, visitors can admire the evening smoke drifting from the stilt houses at the foot of the mountain. There are no car horns or dust—only the sounds of people chatting, occasionally punctuated by bursts of cheerful laughter. In the morning, visitors can watch the sunrise as waves of white clouds roll across the sky, while the distant horizon glows pink and red as the sun emerges. Bathed in brilliant morning light, people and nature seem to merge into one, leaving visitors longing to return to this peaceful mountaintop again and again.

Beyond exploring Pù Xèo Peak, visitors to the area can also discover historical and cultural sites and beautiful waterfalls, including the historical and cultural site of the Lũng Nhai Oath-taking Ceremony, the Hồ Village Communal House architectural and artistic relic, and Hón Yên Waterfall. They can also enjoy traditional folk songs and dances, sample dishes deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of the Thai ethnic community, and stay in traditional stilt houses.

Pù Xèo Peak has become increasingly popular among visitors seeking exploration and adventure over the past three years. Each year, the summit attracts thousands of visitors, including international tourists. With the goal of turning Pù Xèo Peak into an ideal destination for travelers, Thuong Xuan Commune has stepped up efforts to promote its values, potential and advantages. Local mass organizations have also been instructed to conduct environmental clean-up campaigns to create a clean and open space, while measures have been strengthened to ensure the safety of visitors during their trips and outdoor experiences.

Le Huu Giang, Vice Chairman of the Thuong Xuan Commune People’s Committee, said: “The Pù Xèo Peak – Seven-Tier Waterfall – Lũng Nhai Oath-taking Ceremony historical site route is one of the trekking routes in Thanh Hoa’s mountainous communes. This provides an important foundation for tapping into the potential and advantages of Pù Xèo Peak, developing tourism, creating jobs and improving local residents’ incomes.”

On their journey to explore Pù Xèo Peak, visitors can continue to Van Xuan Commune to enjoy the beauty of Thien Thuy Waterfall. This picturesque waterfall is located within Xuan Lien National Park. According to local archival records, the name Thien Thuy, meaning “water from heaven,” is associated with a traditional legend of the Thai ethnic community.

In the past, the waterfall was known as Mu Waterfall because it originated from the summit of Pù Gio, which is shrouded in clouds throughout the year. Local people believe that on misty days, anyone fortunate enough to witness the waterfall suddenly emerging from the middle of the mountains will be blessed with good luck.

The waterfall consists of a cascade of four tiers, with water plunging from the peaks of the Pù Ta Leo mountain range, which rises more than 1,400 meters above sea level. The highest tier is approximately 500 meters above the stream below. Steep rock faces have been sculpted by the flowing water into fascinating shapes, transforming the area into a magnificent natural painting. At the foot of the waterfall, broad, flat rocks are scattered throughout the valley, providing ideal spots for visitors to rest and admire the grandeur of the surrounding mountains and forests.

Cao Van Tien, a resident of Hac Thanh Ward who has experienced Thien Thuy Waterfall, said: “Visiting Thien Thuy Waterfall in summer allowed me to immerse myself in its crystal-clear, cool waters, escaping the intense summer heat. Looking up, I could see the waterfall cascading down in clouds of white spray, while lush green vegetation on both sides created a vibrant natural landscape. It was truly a memorable experience, and I will definitely return when I have the opportunity.”

However, tourism development at Pù Xèo Peak and Thien Thuy Waterfall currently faces a number of challenges, including difficult access, inadequate supporting infrastructure and a lack of public sanitation facilities. Limited tourism services also mean that visitors often have to travel to other areas for meals and accommodation after their excursions.

To address these challenges, Thuong Xuan and Van Xuan communes need to mobilize resources to invest in infrastructure, particularly transportation infrastructure, to support tourism development. At the same time, greater efforts should be made to promote the area’s natural beauty, traditional cultural values, and the friendliness and hospitality of local residents. These efforts can attract more visitors to the Ngoc Chau Thuong region, contributing to sustainable and effective tourism development.
