Beach Tourism: A Green and Sustainable Destination

Blessed with 102 kilometers of coastline, beautiful beaches, and stunning natural landscapes, Thanh Hoa Province has been actively promoting the development of green, environmentally friendly coastal tourism in an effort to attract more visitors.

During the summer, Hai Tien Beach Tourism Area (Hoang Tien Commune) welcomes a large number of visitors who come to enjoy the beach and escape the heat. Phuong Anh, a visitor from Hanoi, said: “This summer, my family chose Hai Tien Beach as a stop on our journey to explore Thanh Hoa. During our two-day, one-night stay, I was quite impressed by how clean and spacious the beach was, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. I also had the opportunity to take part in various activities, such as accompanying local fishermen to the market to buy seafood or watching boats return to shore, giving me a glimpse into the simple daily life of the local fishing community.”

Hoang Tien Commune has a 6.8-kilometer coastline, picturesque natural scenery, and a fresh, cool climate. The area also preserves a rich collection of traditional cultural values associated with the lives of coastal fishing communities, including folk festivals, the worship of the Whale God, traditional occupations, customs, and local practices. These resources provide an important foundation for developing green tourism combined with diverse experiences to attract visitors.

Truong Dinh Tung, Deputy Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Division of the Hoang Tien Commune People’s Committee, said: “The commune has consistently focused on developing a coastal tourism space that reflects local cultural identity, combining natural landscapes with traditional values, customs, festivals, and the long-established cuisine of coastal fishing communities to create diverse experiences for visitors.

“At the same time, we place strong emphasis on environmental protection at the beach tourism area by regularly organizing beach-cleaning campaigns and collecting plastic waste around residential areas to maintain a green, clean, attractive and civilized environment. We encourage tourism businesses to adopt green tourism solutions, use renewable and environmentally friendly energy, and control the discharge, treatment and management of waste and emissions from tourism activities to minimize their environmental impact.

“We are also promoting the development of eco-friendly seaside resorts, wellness tourism, sports tourism, experiential tourism, and environmental education. Since the beginning of the year, the commune has welcomed more than 1.1 million domestic and international visitors for sightseeing and experiences.”

For many years, Tien Trang Beach (Tien Trang Commune) has also been an attractive green destination for summer visitors. Here, tourists can not only enjoy the cool waters but also take part in a variety of interesting activities, including camping, recreational activities, and visits to Phuc Temple, the Tay Son Stele, and Dong Pagoda. Visitors can stay at nature-oriented guesthouses and hotels and enjoy fresh local seafood.

Doi Thi Sen, owner of Dong Sen Guesthouse in Hong Phong Village, said: “Taking advantage of our location near the sea, my family invested in a guesthouse in 2017, with 10 rooms capable of accommodating around 40 overnight guests. Throughout our tourism operations, we have always placed emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, using sustainable products and strictly complying with regulations on publicly displaying prices and charging the listed prices while ensuring service quality.

“We also focus on cooperating with travel companies within the province to effectively implement tourism stimulus programs.”

Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Head of the Tourism Management Division under the Thanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: “Developing coastal tourism in a green, friendly and sustainable direction is one of the key orientations of Thanh Hoa’s tourism sector. Therefore, the department has identified that developing coastal tourism should not simply focus on exploiting beach resources, but also on creating diverse experiences connected with natural landscapes, local culture and community life.

“When the sea is clean and blue, the landscape is well maintained, services are professional, local people are friendly, and visitors have a wide range of attractive experiences, these become the foundations for building a responsible destination and achieving sustainable tourism development.

“This is also the direction that will enable Thanh Hoa’s coastal tourism to gradually improve its quality and move toward becoming a year-round tourism destination.”
