Civilizations and cultures in the world all originate from river basins. Without exception, Dong Son culture - a culture that developed brilliantly and reached the peak of ancient Vietnamese culture and civilization - was also formed and developed in river basins. In particular, the Ma River basin - Thanh Hoa is one of the typical "factors" contributing to that peak development. Dong Son archaeological site Belonging to Dong Son village (Ham Rong ward, Thanh Hoa city) was discovered in 1924. Here, artifacts from the Bronze Age (bronze drums, production tools, weapons, etc.) and ancient tombs of people who lived over three thousand years ago were found. Dong Son relic site consists of two areas: the riverbank area and the area in the village. The riverbank area is determined from Lo Cao area (1km from Ham Rong bridge) to Cua Luy area near Dong Son village today. This area is about 2,000m long, with an average width of 30 - 50m from the foot of the mountain to the edge of the river. In this area, bronze drums, tombs, traces of stilt houses, stoves, terraced fields, etc. have been discovered. Up to now, the number of artifacts of Dong Son culture found up ... View more

Description

The Đông Sơn Archaeological Site – Preserving Many Precious Values

The Đông Sơn Archaeological Site consists of two main areas: the southern bank of the Mã River and the ancient Đông Sơn village (now part of Hàm Rồng ward, Thanh Hóa city). The Đông Sơn Archaeological Site was recognized as a tourist destination by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee under Decision No. 579/QD-UBND dated February 12, 2019.

The Đông Sơn archaeological site, located in Đông Sơn village, Hàm Rồng ward, Thanh Hóa city, was first discovered in 1924 by pure chance. Nguyễn Văn Nắm, a farmer from Đông Sơn village, while digging for worms to fish by the Mã Riverbank, unexpectedly uncovered a group of bronze artifacts exposed by the eroding riverbank. Since then, the Đông Sơn archaeological site has been excavated multiple times, yielding a wealth of information about various types of relics, from residential sites (stilt houses, cooking areas…) to burial sites. Thousands of unique artifacts have been uncovered, including Đông Sơn bronze drums, symbols of regional leaders, fishing lead weights, artifacts from distant regions of the world, and fragments of pottery fired right here in Đông Sơn. This is the heart of the Mã River Basin civilization during the Hùng Kings era.

Đông Sơn was the first site where traces of a brilliant Bronze Age culture were found, and the term “Đông Sơn” has since become an archaeological term recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition, Đông Sơn village is home to numerous other historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Lê Uy Temple, Phạm Thông Pagoda, a Confucian temple, ancestral halls, and ancient houses (nearly 200 years old) belonging to the Đông Sơn inhabitants, including the home of Lương Trọng Duệ. With its immense historical and cultural significance (both material and spiritual), the Đông Sơn archaeological site in the ancient Đông Sơn village has become, and will continue to be, a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over.

Up to now, the number of artifacts of Dong Son culture found up to tens of thousands of pieces is a valuable source of materials for more comprehensive and accurate research on this culture. Artifacts such as production tools have bronze plowshares, sickles, fish hooks, iron axes... Weapons have battle axes, daggers, spears, spears, bronze arrows... Containers have pots, bowls, vases, jars, bowls, urns... Jewelry has bracelets, earrings (both stone, glass and bronze) especially unique works of art with statues, bells, flutes, drums... However, drums are typical relics of Dong Son culture. Heger type I drums - Dong Son drums in Vietnam have announced 143 pieces (in 1993), Thanh Hoa alone has the most drums - up to now, over 80 pieces have been discovered. According to researchers, the creators of Dong Son culture are the Lac Viet people.
