A Weekend Day in Quy Chu Village

10/09/2026
On Sunday morning, the grounds of Trung Communal House in Quy Chu Village, Hoang Giang Commune, were livelier than usual. Beneath the shade of an ancient banyan tree, members of the Tu Huan Club gathered to rehearse the traditional performance. The rhythmic clacking of wooden clappers and the deep beat of leather drums mingled with laughter and conversation, dispelling the oppressive heat of the day.

Every weekend, setting aside their personal work and commitments, members of the Tú Huần Club gather to rehearse the traditional performance.

Dressed neatly, performers take their places with wooden clappers and drums ready for the rehearsal to begin.

The Tú Huần performance features 14 people: the father and mother stand in the center, surrounded by their 12 children. At the beginning of the performance, the mother calls each child forward, gives them advice and assigns each one a name reflecting their personality.

The father beats the drum to keep the rhythm steady and the dance circle flowing smoothly...

The pair of wooden clappers has become smooth and polished from years of being held and used.

The performers maintain even spacing, one following another, while moving their arms up and down in rhythm.

Holding a wooden clapper in each hand, the performers walk and strike the two pieces together, creating a cheerful, rhythmic clacking sound.

The instrumental ensemble features drums, wooden blocks and cymbals, accompanied by lively singing.

When the lyrics shift to praise for farming and the beauty of the homeland, the dance circle begins to move.

With slightly bent postures, the performers take rhythmic, bouncing steps.

The rustic yet vigorous dance evokes the images and patterns found on ancient bronze drums.

Beads of sweat appear on their faces, yet their expressions remain bright as they move to the rhythm.

The audience consists of neighbors from around the communal house.

An elderly woman returning from the market stops by to take a rest...

The rehearsal ends in laughter as the club members gather around a phone to watch recordings of their own movements.
