Năng Cát Village and Ma Hao Waterfall: Ancient Legends and Captivating Scenery

Located at the foot of Chí Linh Mountain, over 15 kilometers from the center of Lang Chánh Township in Lang Chánh District, Năng Cát Village in Trí Nang Commune is primarily home to the Thái ethnic group. With a cool climate, averaging between 15–18°C throughout the year, Năng Cát is blessed with scenic beauty and numerous famous landmarks, including Ma Hao Waterfall, which is historically linked to the heroic resistance of Lê Lợi’s insurgent forces against foreign invaders. Not only does Năng Cát offer diverse natural landscapes, but it also preserves important cultural and historical values of the Thái people.

When visiting Ma Hao Waterfall in the summer, tourists can immerse themselves in its crystal-clear, cool waters or relax on large, flat stones while listening to the sound of the cascading waterfall. Surrounded by the grandeur of the ancient forest, the waterfall’s flow, falling from over 100 meters high, creates a spectacular sight as it crashes through a gap in the mountainside, accompanied by a sound that echoes like an ancient call from the wilderness. At the base of the waterfall, the waters form a gentle, transparent stream, adding to the serene atmosphere of this untouched, pristine nature. The peaceful stream, the unspoiled mountains, and the dense forests combine to create a breathtaking, poetic landscape — an ideal place for hiking, picnics, or simply relaxing in the great outdoors.

Anyone who has visited Ma Hao has likely heard the legend of its association with the battle for independence fought by Lê Lợi’s army. According to an ancient tale, during the 15th century, when the Lam Sơn insurgent army, led by Lê Lợi, was surrounded by the Minh invaders, the enemy released a pack of vicious hunting dogs to chase them down. Lê Lợi and his forces fled into the mountains, with one loyal dog by their side, but the enemy kept pursuing. Reaching the base of the waterfall, Lê Lợi and his men bravely crossed it, risking their lives. However, the dog, exhausted, could not follow and simply stood still, yawning. As the invaders closed in, the dog turned around and attacked the enemy’s dogs before leaping into the swirling waters below. After the invaders retreated, Lê Lợi ordered his soldiers to retrieve the dog's body and give it a proper burial. In honor of the loyal dog, Lê Lợi named the waterfall Má Háo, which means “yawning dog” in the Thái language, later mispronounced as Ma Hao by the local people.

The nearby Năng Cát Village was also a key site for Lê Lợi and his forces. It was here that the hero and his army took refuge, fortified their strength, and planned their strategies for driving out the invaders. The name Năng Cát was given by Lê Lợi to the village nestled at the foot of Chí Linh Mountain.

The Majestic Ma Hao Waterfall

Ma Hao Waterfall remains a stunning, untouched natural wonder at the foot of Chí Linh Mountain, surrounded by ancient forests.

In addition to visiting Ma Hao Waterfall, tourists to Năng Cát can learn about the unique cultural heritage of the Thái people. The village is home to traditional stilt houses, which are built on the mountainside. With 124 households, 122 of these still reside in stilt houses, a distinctive architectural style that is rare in many highland villages. These houses are not only spacious and airy, but they are also designed to avoid mosquitoes and wild animals, while providing a harmonious blend of beauty and practicality.

Visitors interested in the culture of the Thái people can immerse themselves in the daily life of the locals by participating in traditional activities, such as ném còn (throwing a ring), chọi cù (cock fighting), and chơi quay (spinning tops). Guests can also witness the craftsmanship of Thái women, who are skilled in weaving colorful brocade textiles. It is a tradition among Thái women that, upon marriage, they must be able to embroider scarves, weave fabric, and make clothes and blankets for both themselves and their husband’s family.
