Lady Triều Temple in Quảng Cư Ward

According to folk legend, Lady Triều is the one who founded the craft of weaving fishing nets, closely tied to the lives of the coastal inhabitants. One version of the story tells of her as a poor, kind-hearted girl who was taught the craft of silkworm farming and weaving by an old woman. Another version describes her as a fairy from the heavens who descended to the mortal world to help the poor. Another story suggests she was a princess of King Lý Trong, skilled in mulberry cultivation, silkworm farming, silk spinning, and thread pulling. During a royal tour with her father, the king, to the mouth of the river in what is now Triều Thanh Lộc, Cung Thượng, and old Sầm Sơn, she fell in love with the landscape and people there. She requested to stay and teach the villagers the craft of silkworm farming and weaving. From that moment, the craft of weaving silk, fishing nets, and fishing tools flourished in Triều Dương village. The fishing nets and woven products of Sầm Sơn’s fishermen became increasingly famous, with fishermen from all over coming to buy them. This transformed the once poor fishing village into a bustling trade center, full of ships and boats. To honor her contributions, the villagers built a temple dedicated to her, naming it "Lady Triều Temple."

Although the legends of Lady Triều have various versions, they all celebrate the image of a woman who taught the people of Sầm Sơn the art of weaving nets and weaving fishing nets, contributing to the prosperity and well-being of the coastal community. The name "Lady Triều" comes from an emotional story: an old, mysterious beggar woman who, after teaching the craft, transformed into the waves when the tide rose and disappeared, leaving her name unknown. To remember her, the villagers named her "Lady Triều," both marking the moment of her departure and symbolizing her immortality in the hearts of the people. She became a symbol of protection and assistance for fishermen, and her name was given to the large area of Triều Dương, which now includes the Trung Sơn and Quảng Cư wards.

Dr. Hoàng Minh Tường, in one of his writings, observed that “Lady Triều initially symbolized the agricultural society, farming, and crafts related to silk products and fabrics. Moving to the coastal region, Lady Triều became the patron saint of the craft of weaving fishing nets, and she became a sea goddess, capable of calming the sea, ensuring the smooth sailing of nets and fishing.”

With its inherent cultural value, the Lady Triều Temple in Quảng Cư Ward was recognized as a provincial historical site in 1993. The Lady Triều Festival is held annually from the 10th to the 14th of the second lunar month and is one of the largest festivals in the coastal region, attracting large crowds of people.
