National Historical Site - Co Phuong Cave

Co Phương Cave, also known as Co Phường Cave (meaning the 'Fig Tree Cave'), is located in Sai Hamlet, Phu Le Commune. This is an important historical site, serving as both a storage facility and a military supply depot, as well as a refuge for soldiers, youth volunteers (TNXP), and wartime laborers during the resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism in our nation's history.

According to recorded documents, around 3:00 PM on April 2, 1953, French aircraft took turns bombing and devastating the Sai Hamlet area. Many youth volunteers (TNXP) and wartime laborers, in the prime of their youth, heroically sacrificed their lives while carrying out their duties here.

At this time, in Co Phuong Cave, a 13-member wartime labor team (all from Thiệu Nguyên Commune, Thiệu Hóa District) were sheltering in the cave when it was bombed. The explosion caused the cave to collapse and blocked its entrance, trapping 11 individuals inside. One person had exited the cave before the bombing and survived, while another, severely wounded, was taken to the hospital for treatment but tragically passed away shortly after.

Every year, on April 2nd (the annual death anniversary), on the full moon and first day of each month, as well as on holidays and special occasions, government agencies, departments, and organizations from the province, district, and commune, along with the families of the martyrs and local residents, gather to visit and offer incense in remembrance of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives here.

With its exceptional historical, cultural, and scientific value, in 2012, Co Phuong Cave was recognized by the People's Committee of Thanh Hóa Province as a revolutionary historical site. In 2019, it was further recognized as a National Historical Monument.

In the coming years, Quan Hóa District will continue to enhance infrastructure investments and connect the site with nearby landmarks, scenic spots, and neighboring areas to attract tourists and promote the historical significance of the site. To achieve this, the district urgently requires the attention and support of the province and relevant authorities.
