Situated in the Hàm Rồng region, one of the most renowned historical landmarks of Thanh Hóa Province, Quyết Thắng Hill is a site of profound historical significance, commemorating the sacrifices and valorous struggles of our soldiers and people during the resistance war against American imperialism. This location not only preserves the memories of past events but also stands as a symbol of heroic spirit and unwavering patriotism.

"Quyết Thắng" – A Declaration, a Belief, and a Will

Quyết Thắng Hill is located on the slopes of Cánh Tiên Mountain, in Hàm Rồng Ward, Thanh Hóa City. From the Hàm Rồng Bridge or the Hoàng Long Bridge, looking slightly northwest, visitors can clearly see the two words "Quyết Thắng" painted in white on the slope of Cánh Tiên Mountain. Since 1965, as the U.S. escalated its bombing campaign against the North, with Hàm Rồng Bridge being a major target of intense bombing aimed at severing the North’s supply lines to the South, this site became a symbol of resilience and determination.

"Quyết Thắng" – A Symbol of Unwavering Belief

In the midst of heavy bombings and relentless danger, the soldiers and people of Hàm Rồng not only stood firm in battle but also carved the words "Quyết Thắng" into the slopes of Cánh Tiên Mountain as a solemn vow to resolutely protect the vital transportation route. This act represented their steadfast belief in eventual victory. After each round of American bombings on the Hàm Rồng Bridge, the soldiers, youth, and local militia of Hàm Rồng and Yên Vực would gather stones, carefully arranging them to form the two words “Quyết Thắng”.

Hàm Rồng, home to the famous Hàm Rồng Bridge, was a fierce battleground during the years of the resistance war against the American imperialists. The Hàm Rồng Bridge was not only an important transportation structure but also a frequent target of enemy airstrikes. However, amidst the smoke and fire of war, the unwavering fighting spirit of the local soldiers and people was forged and became a symbol of revolutionary heroism.

By 1989, the 26/3 Construction Team from Construction Company 1 (now the Thanh Hóa Construction Corporation) was assigned by the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee—the unit directly overseeing the project—to reconstruct the two characters "Quyết Thắng" in preparation for the 25th anniversary of the Hàm Rồng Victory. The Cánh Tiên Mountain slope, with an incline of approximately 45 degrees, and the unfavorable weather conditions made the transportation of materials for the project particularly challenging. Despite these obstacles, with the assistance of the staff at the Thanh Hóa Radio and Television Station situated on Cánh Tiên Mountain, over 500m² of earth was transported to complete the restoration of the two characters "Quyết Thắng" as they appear today. The characters were rebuilt to the exact shape and size as before, each letter measuring 10 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1 meter in thickness, with a total length of over 100 meters.

When visiting Quyết Thắng Hill, travellers also have the opportunity to explore other historical landmarks within the Hàm Rồng cultural heritage complex, such as the Hàm Rồng Bridge, C4 Hill, Đông Sơn Ancient Village, and the Đông Sơn archaeological site. Quyết Thắng Hill was recognized as a National Revolutionary Historical Site under Decision No. 912/QĐ-BTBVH on July 20, 1994.

Quyết Thắng Hill, a symbol of heroic fighting spirit, has now become an important historical site. It serves not only as a place for educating the younger generation about patriotism and the importance of defending the homeland, but also as an attractive tourist destination. Visitors to the site can not only admire the natural beauty of the Hàm Rồng area but also have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the heroic victories and sacrifices made by the soldiers and people during the resistance against American imperialism.
