Astonishingly Beautiful Kho Mường Village

Kho Mường Village is a rustic mountain village located in the Hua Mường Valley, within the buffer zone of the Pù Luông Nature Reserve, Bá Thước District. The road to Kho Mường is winding and curved, with cliffs on one side and deep ravines on the other, revealing lush terraced fields and expansive forests. This road offers breathtaking natural scenery but can also be challenging and dangerous, which might discourage some people. However, it is an irresistible attraction for adventurers seeking exploration.

In addition to the inviting Pù Luông peak, Kho Mường Village also boasts an alluring destination—the Kho Mường Cave. Located within the cave complex discovered in the Pù Luông Nature Reserve, Kho Mường Cave has become a popular spot for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts, both domestically and internationally. In the midst of a pristine natural area, Kho Mường Cave stuns visitors with its ancient and majestic beauty. The cave consists of towering limestone formations, likely millions of years old. The cave's interior stretches over 2.5 km, with many nooks and crannies that go deep into the earth. As visitors venture deeper, they can behold strange formations of stalactites and stalagmites, taking the shape of people, trees, wild animals, and a dazzling array of colors. Further into the cave, there is a large, flat area resembling a playground where visitors often stop to take beautiful photos as memories.

Kho Mường Village is home to 60 households, with a population of 225 people, and 13 households involved in community-based tourism. The village has maintained its traditional stilt houses and lies in a valley with a cool climate year-round. The unique and pristine natural scenery of the ancient forests, along with the traditional way of life in the Thai ethnic communities, gives the area a peaceful, fresh, and poetic atmosphere. The local people are simple, friendly, and honest.

With a rich and diverse cuisine made from locally available ingredients from the forests and streams, the dishes vary throughout the year depending on the season. Some of the dishes the Thai people commonly prepare include grilled fish, lam rice, steamed pork, grilled chicken, stone snails, and purple sticky rice. The most popular and beloved dish is the five-color sticky rice made from local glutinous rice, along with lam rice. In particular, the area is famous for its dishes made from Cổ Lũng ducks—a local breed known for its distinctive characteristics. These ducks, with short necks and short legs, are raised near streams and fields, resulting in firm and flavorful meat and eggs with rich yolks. Many travelers are eager to try this local specialty when visiting Bá Thước.

Recognizing that community-based tourism is a "lever" to help people gradually escape poverty, increase income, and improve their lives, the Bá Thước District government has actively promoted community tourism in Kho Mường Village. This initiative aims to boost the local economy and social development, improve living standards, and preserve and promote the cultural identity and customs of the Thai people living here. With its values, Kho Mường Village has been recognized as a tourist destination by the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa Province under Decision No. 5211/QD-UBND dated December 21, 2018.
