Products in Tra Dong Village

It is said that the bronze casting craft in Tra Dong Village was brought by the Vu family during the Ly Dynasty, which is why there is a folk saying: “The land of the Le family – the craft of the Vu family.” However, another theory suggests that it was actually Kong Minh Khong who introduced the bronze casting craft to Che Village. During the reign of King Tu Duc (1848 - 1883), the people of Tra Dong bronze casting village built a temple to honor him as the founder of the bronze casting craft in Vietnam.

After many periods of prosperity, the bronze casting craft in Tra Dong faced difficulties in the late 1980s and early 2000s. Due to the fierce competition from the market economy and the appearance of industrial products, the craft village suffered significant decline. For over two decades, the bronze casting furnaces were cold, and many artisans had to change professions to make a living. However, in recent years, thanks to efforts to revive traditional craft villages and the dedication of passionate artisans, the bronze casting craft of Tra Dong has been gradually restored, bringing hope for a brighter future. Amidst the smoke and fire, the artisans patiently and meticulously carve intricate designs on the casting molds, evoking images of skilled artists, shrinking to engrave the beauty of the land and people into every bronze item.

Currently, the traditional bronze casting craft village in Tra Dong operates with 25 large casting furnaces and 4 companies specializing in manufacturing and trading bronze casting products. Every year, this industry makes a significant contribution to the commune’s total revenue, while also providing stable employment for hundreds of local workers. Notably, the village has 4 artisans who were awarded the title of Outstanding Artisan by the President of Vietnam: Le Van Bay, Nguyen Ba Chau, Le Van Duong, and Dang Ich Hoan. These artisans play an essential role in the craft’s revival and have contributed to the development and revival of traditional bronze casting values.

Tra Dong is not only the only place in Vietnam that preserves traditional bronze casting techniques, but it has also become an attractive destination for tourists who wish to explore this craft village.
