Description

The Ho Dynasty Citadel - World Cultural Heritage

Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage

Located 50 km west of Thanh Hóa city, in the communes of Vĩnh Long and Vĩnh Tiến, Vĩnh Lộc District, Thanh Hóa Province, the Ho Dynasty Citadel, also known by other names such as Tây Đô Citadel, An Tôn Citadel, or Tây Giai Citadel, was constructed by Hồ Quý Ly in 1397. It served as the capital of Đại Việt under the Trần Dynasty from 1398 to 1400, and later became the capital of the Đại Ngu Kingdom under the Hồ Dynasty from 1400 to 1407.

The Ho Dynasty Citadel heritage site includes: the inner citadel, the outer citadel (La Thành), and the Nam Giao Altar, covering an area of 155.5 hectares, surrounded by a buffer zone of 5,078.5 hectares. This is a sturdy fortress built with unique stone architecture, on a large scale that is rare in Viet Nam. It is the only remaining stone citadel in Southeast Asia and one of the very few stone fortifications left in the world. The citadel was built in a remarkably short period, just around 3 months (from January to March 1397). Despite more than six centuries of existence, many sections of the citadel remain relatively intact, offering a vivid reflection of a historical and cultural era, and embodying regional and international significance. Visitors to the site have the opportunity to admire the impressive and rare beauty of the Ho Dynasty Citadel and experience unique tourism products.

Spiritual Tourism

The Ho Dynasty Citadel tourist area is located in Vĩnh Lộc, a land rich in historical significance and famous for its concentration of cultural and historical relics. Nearly 30 heritage sites are associated with renowned historical figures and captivating legendary stories, such as the Bình Khương Temple, the Trần Khát Chân Temple, Đông Môn Communal House, and Giáng Pagoda. These spiritual landmarks attract many pilgrims and tourists each year.

Festival Tourism

Connected to the historical sites, traditional festivals are held annually at various spiritual locations within the Ho Dynasty Citadel tourist area, including the Du Anh Pagoda Festival, Đông Môn Communal House Festival, and Trần Khát Chân Temple Festival.

Archaeological Research Tourism

The Ho Dynasty Citadel has great potential for archaeological research tourism. After more than six centuries, the site has been severely affected by time, wars, and natural forces. Most of the remains are buried artifacts beneath the ground. Every year, the site attracts a significant number of tourists and archaeological researchers, both domestic and international.

Visiting Ancient Villages

The Ho Dynasty Citadel area is home to ancient villages such as Xuân Giai, Tây Giai, and Đông Môn, with histories of over 100 years. These villages still preserve the charm of traditional Vietnamese architecture, with ancient banyan trees, communal wells, village courtyards, and traditional homes. Notably, the ancient house of Phạm Ngọc Tùng in Tây Giai village, located about 200 meters from the west gate of the citadel, is an important architectural and artistic relic from the 19th century. Built in 1810, the house belonged to Phạm Ngọc Tùng's seventh-generation ancestor. In 2002, as part of the "Preservation of Traditional Vietnamese Folk Houses" program, the restoration of Phạm Ngọc Tùng's house was funded and supported by JICA and Nyū Chōwa University from Japan ( Nyū Chōwa is Latin pronunciation for ニューチョウワ in Japanese). This house was recognized by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Organization as one of the six most beautiful ancient houses in Viet Nam.

Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage

With its outstanding global value, on June 27, 2011, the Ho Dynasty Citadel was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, highlighting its global significance and the integrity and authenticity of the heritage. Currently, the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center, in collaboration with the Vĩnh Lộc District People's Committee, is actively promoting the citadel as an attractive tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors.
