Located in Trí Nang Commune, Lang Chánh District, Ma Hao Waterfall is one of the most prominent natural attractions in Thanh Hoa Province. Ma Hao Waterfall is one of the most prominent natural attractions in Thanh Hoa Province, located in Trí Nang Commune, Lang Chánh District. The waterfall originates from the peak of Pù Rinh Mountain, over 1,000 meters above sea level. The water cascades down through the valleys, creating a powerful flow that produces a stunning display of frothy white foam. The sight is both majestic and poetic, drawing numerous visitors and nature enthusiasts to experience its beauty.

Not only known for its natural beauty, Ma Hao Waterfall is also intertwined with a moving legend of loyalty which tells that during the 15th century, as the Lam Sơn forces led by Lê Lợi were battling the Minh invaders, they were relentlessly pursued and exhausted on their retreat. At this critical moment, Lê Lợi’s loyal dog, too weary to cross the waterfall, bravely turned back to confront the enemy’s dogs, fiercely fighting to protect its master. Afterward, the dog leapt into the swirling waters. This courageous act delayed the enemy, giving the Lam Sơn forces precious time to retreat safely. Once the enemy withdrew, Lê Lợi sent his soldiers to recover the dog’s body and arrange a proper burial. The waterfall was then named “Ma Hảo,” which means “the waterfall of the submerged dog” in the Thai language. Over time, the name evolved to “Ma Hao.”

The waterfall has a wild, poetic beauty

In 2007, Ma Hao Waterfall was officially recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a Provincial-Level Scenic Area. Following this, a detailed plan was developed for the Năng Cát Ecotourism Area – Ma Hao Waterfall, located in Trí Nang Commune, Lang Chánh District, covering an area of 400 hectares. This includes the Ma Hao Ecotourism Zone, the Năng Cát village area, as well as supporting infrastructure, services, hydropower plants, and medicinal herb gardens.

Today, Ma Hao Waterfall is not only a beautiful natural landmark but also a symbol of loyalty, closely tied to the heroic history of the Lam Sơn forces. It is being developed as an attractive ecotourism destination, where visitors can immerse themselves in the pristine, majestic nature while also experiencing the rich cultural and historical values preserved in this site.
