During the Le and Nguyen Dynasties, Lạch Bạng was one of the most important trading ports of Đại Việt. With its strategic location at the gateway to the East Sea, it was not only a stopover for domestic merchant ships but also a key point for foreign traders from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

Today, although Lạch Bạng is no longer the center of trade it once was, remnants of its glorious past still remain through its historical relics:

  • Cô Tiên Temple: This sacred temple was built to honor the goddess of the sea, believed to have protected merchant ships passing through this coastal area. The temple sits on a small hill, overlooking Lạch Bạng Bay, offering visitors a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.

  • Whale God Temple: The Whale God (Cá Ông) has long been worshipped by fishermen as a deity that protects them during sea voyages. The Whale God Temple in Lạch Bạng hosts an annual ritual to honor this deity, drawing both locals and visitors to participate.

Every year, on the 8th day of the first lunar month, the Cầu Ngư Festival is held, a significant event where people pray for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and safe sea voyages.

The festival includes:

  • The procession of the Whale God from the temple to the sea, reenacting the historical journeys of merchant ships.

  • Cultural performances such as traditional folk singing, lion dances, and folk games, creating a lively yet sacred atmosphere.

  • Offerings and incense ceremonies at Cô Tiên Temple, showing gratitude for the gods who have protected the people of the sea.

The festival not only reflects the local spiritual culture but also serves as an occasion for the community to come together and preserve the rich traditions of the region.
