The Temple of General Hoàng Minh Tự - A spiritual destination imbued with homeland culture

The Temple of General Hoàng Minh Tự was established during the Trần Dynasty, located on the land of Trường Lệ village in the former Du Vịnh commune (now part of Hồng Hải street, Quảng Vinh ward, Sầm Sơn city, Thanh Hóa province). It was built to honor the deity who contributed significantly to assisting the royal court in managing military supplies and defeating the Mongol invaders, thereby ensuring the peace and security of the Vietnamese territory.

According to the local legend and the genealogy of the Hoàng family of Trường Lệ village, the deity is known by the reign title Minh Tự and was bestowed the title of "Thượng Đẳng Tối Linh Thần" (Supreme Sacred Deity). The deity, whose surname was Hoàng and personal name was Hiển, served under Prince Hưng Đạo Trần Quốc Tuấn. He was entrusted with the important responsibility of overseeing logistics and military supplies. During the most difficult and intense moments of the resistance against the Mongol invasion, he demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the royal court and exhibited the courage and skill of a talented general. After the victory over the Mongol forces, the Trần Dynasty bestowed upon him the title "Minh Tự." He brought his entire family to settle in Trường Lệ village, while he remained in the military until the end of his life. After his passing, the Trần emperor granted him the title "Đại Vương Tôn Thần" (Great King Divine Deity), and his remains were laid to rest in Trường Lệ village. The king ordered the people of Trường Lệ to build a temple in his honor and allocated 60 quan (an ancient unit of currency) to fund the construction of the temple. Over the successive dynasties, the Temple of Hoàng Minh Tự received royal decrees, with the highest being the title "Đại Vương Thượng Đẳng Tối Linh Thần" (Great King, Supreme Sacred Deity).

Throughout the turbulent events of history, by 1960, the temple had been completely destroyed. In 1994, with the attention of the relevant authorities and the goodwill of the local people and visitors from all over, the temple was restored. The restoration included the construction of several parts: the outer worship hall (Tiền Đường), the middle hall (Trung Đường), the main sanctuary (Chính Tẩm), designed in the shape of the character "Đinh," as well as the temple courtyard, the Tam Quan gate, the caretaker's house (Nhà Thủ Từ), boundary walls, and shady trees. The Temple of General Hoàng Minh Tự was officially recognized as a provincial historical and cultural relic by Decision No. 114/QĐ-VHTT on May 25, 1994, issued by the Director of the Department of Culture and Information of Thanh Hóa Province.

Based on the remaining relics of the Temple, since its restoration, the local People's Committee has organized an annual traditional festival on the 24th day of the first lunar month, at the commune level. The purpose of the festival is to preserve and promote the cultural values of the homeland, serving as a community ritual for the people of Quảng Vinh. It meets the spiritual and religious needs of the residents both within and outside the ward, while also educating descendants and future generations to uphold the principle of "when drinking water, do remember its source," and express gratitude to the deities. Additionally, the festival contributes to promoting spiritual tourism in the Sầm Sơn city area in general and Quảng Vinh ward in particular.
